Biography

It was the year 1521 of the Sixth Astral Era, on the 14th Sun of the 4th Umbral Moon. Underneath the vast, sweltering canopies of the Golmore Jungle, a young Rava Viera named Freyr was born onto the world of Etheirys; the village of Rhöen welcomed the newborn kit into their fold. Even in his early life, Freyr was shown to be a headstrong child, always wandering off or getting himself hurt. Outside of his lessons and playtime, many of the village considered him an unruly child with a heart of gold, for he still had utmost respect for their elders. However, they did see in him exceptional promise to grow into a stalwart warrior for the village, especially approaching his adolescent years, and he took his combat training in earnest. As his designation of being a male Viera became more apparent, Freyr steeled his resolve and accepted his imminent role as Wood-Warder, though he was deeply saddened at the notion of leaving behind his family and home for his entire life. Sometime after his thirteenth nameday, he was taken in under the tutelage of a veteran Warder. For the next seven years, the Rava youth had undergone a grueling series of trials and conditioning in preparation for his duty, and he was determined to rise to the challenge, always tackling them with a fervent stride. With these intense feats of survival, the adolescent Viera boy transformed into a strapping, towering young man, which was incredibly unusual for a male Viera.Upon the completion of his training, Freyr took on the ordained title of Wood-Warder and thus began his life of seclusion. For six years, the newly appointed guardian lived a meager existence of survival, and he had no qualms of assailing any who dared to trespass on the sacred woods of his people. The only brief respite from the solitude was returning to his home village to mate for every cycle. This lifestyle would be short-lived for the Rava man as the conflagration of war loomed over the horizon.Beyond the great jungle, the Garlean Empire led a conquest throughout the kingdom of Dalmasca and seized control of the entire nation, their technological prowess unrivaled. With the region under imperial control, the army set their sight towards Golmore in order to continue their conquest northward. For Freyr and many of his fellow wood-warders, this was the beginning of the war of attrition against the army of steel. Though much fewer in number compared to the might of the empire, their intimate knowledge of their home had served them well for a time, and the use of guerilla warfare tactics had stalled the impending onslaught of such a formidable foe. Unfortunately, Garlemald's might could no longer be held back, and with a shockingly powerful offensive, the Imperial invaders had decimated the last line of defense. Having been delivered a brutal blow from the surprise attack, Freyr was rendered incapacitated before taken as a prisoner of war.The first year of captivity was absolutely grueling for Freyr, thrust into a drastically foreign environment. His Imperial captors wasted no time inflicting horrific beatings and flogging, leaving permanent scars on his back. For their sadistic entertainment, he was also pitted against other prisoners and beastkin in heinous duels to the death, and for each one survived, his remorse, for the lives taken by his hand, grew further. After over a year of this vicious cycle of torture, the Imperial leaders placed him into conscripted service, believing him to be a better use on the field rather than wasting away in a dungeon; as a preemptive counter-measure for any potential defection or disobedience, he was forced to wear a shock collar wherever he went. The viera man had no choice but to comply lest he suffer the consequences, yet he was nonetheless determined to return to his homeland. His squadron was sympathetic towards his goals as fellow conscripts, and they would teach him the common tongue along with a shared promise to escape the empire together. For the next fourteen years, Freyr was molded into a killing machine, striking fear and death unto rebel Dalmascan soldiers and innocent civilians alike, and he was infamously dubbed 'The Scourge of Dalmasca' across the continent. He absolutely took no joy or pride in any of these actions on behalf of Garlemald, but he needed to bide his time for the prime opportunity to escape and learn what had become of his home. One day, however, his squadron was ambushed by Dalmascan rebels, and after a prolonged, brutal clash, Freyr would be the only survivor of that encounter, leaving him completely devastated. However, he would never give up their cause and promise, not letting their sacrifices be in vain.In the year 1562, the opportunity for escape would arrive in the aftermath of what had transpired in both The Battle of Silvertear Skies and the Bozja Incident. The former event would trigger the awakening of the Echo for Freyr, and he also saw visions of not only what had occurred in that faraway land but the fate of his people of Rhöen. While he was consumed with an impalpable rage, it was only with the latter event that he could finally begin his defection. The massive explosion in Bozja caused severe damage and interference to their magitek technologies for over several hundred malms away. Stationed at the site of a voidsent armament near Bozja, he was able to wrest free of his restraints and began to slaughter his now former comrades. Reaching the facility's depths, he was able to make a pact with the voidsent housed within the structure, and empowered with dark entity's power, they were able to wipe out the rest of the soldiers before fleeing. Now branded a fugitive in the occupied territories of Othard, Freyr was able to make a narrow escape from Dalmasca, though it was not without tribulations. He was relentlessly harried at ever corner of the region by Imperial pursuers, and he had suffered a multitude of horrific injuries, including severe burns across his right arm inflicted by his former leader. It is by a miracle that he was able to cross the Burn into Yanxia before eventually reaching Kugane. Fifteen years later, he makes his voyage to Eorzea as he seeks a new life and purpose. Walking down this unknown path, he adopted the name “Volkan” in memory of the first companion he made with his old squadron, a Bozjan man who was killed in that mission all those years ago. Unbeknownst to him, the path he will soon walk will be the path of destiny...

Personality

Volkan had maintained his daring personality well into adulthood, his bold, unflinching approach to his duties bringing inspiration to his fellow warders. Additionally, his high-spirited disposition was infectious for many in his village. This would all drastically shift once he was captured by the Garlean invaders. During his time as an Imperial Conscript, he would grow increasingly more withdrawn on his emotions and other people, a stark contrast to his confident youth.Despite his seemingly aloof attitude nowadays, Volkan could never ignore the plight of others once he liberated himself from Imperial servitude, always one to lend his assistance to those in dire need. He is altruistic to a fault, sometimes getting himself into mortal danger even, but oft-times he doesn't regret his actions. Additionally, he cares not for law or customs, especially those that hindered the common people, so he frequently gets in trouble by authorities or perplexed by societal norms. No matter his opponent, Volkan refuses to back down from a challenge; he enjoys the thrill of battle as he precariously weaves through the threads of fate. In high-stakes situations, he would often launch straight into battle with reckless abandon, never one to wait to commit to action.Whenever he's not in the throes of battle, Volkan tends to seek solace with nature in complete solitude; sometimes he is found sparring on his own to keep his mind busy and his senses sharp. He prefers to keep his emotions to himself even as he ventures out beyond the Jungle, a habit that grew exponentially with the trials and tribulations he endured at the hands of the Garlean Empire.

Hooks

❖ Soldier for Hire ❖

If there was ever a need for a sword arm, you could do no wrong picking up this male Viera. With an impressive stature and numerous years of combat experience, Volkan never fails to fulfill his client's needs and wants, be it a protection escort to a far-off destination or slaying a notorious monster; hunting down wanted criminals is also fair game. However, he will not be involved in any unsavory or illegal businesses.

❖ The Scourge of Dalmasca ❖

Mayhap you were a resident or refugee of Dalmasca when the once-sovereign kingdom fell at the hands of the Garlean Empire, its leaders all exterminated in the wake of the invasion, or simply heard of the fate of the formerly prosperous country. Many inhabitants of the nation were forcibly conscripted into Imperial service, with a particular Viera being one of them. Known as the Scourge of Dalmasca, the only identifiable features of the infamous infantry Pilus were the leporine ears that stuck out of the helm, onyx-colored fur tipped with hazelnut highlights. Their might was said to have rivaled the other Pilus of the IVth Legion, and perhaps the Legatus himself. At the behest of the Empire, it was said that the Scourge quashed all insurgent forces with brutal efficiency, though one day they abruptly disappeared; rumors speculating that the notorious soldier had allegedly betrayed the Legion with a reports of a massive bounty on his head.Volkan seems hesitant about sharing his past, but perhaps with some prodding and trust, he just might share his dark history prior to coming to Eorzea.

❖ Röskur ❖

Volkan always has a particular affinity for animals since his early life, with many coming to trust the Viera man quite easily. This is especially true for the wolf-dog that currently accompanies him, whose name is Röskur. The duo have endured many years of hardships together and forged an unbreakable bond. He seems to look toward his beast companion with a fondness his eyes and likes to talk about him.

❖ Viera ❖

Being able to roam across the world of Etheirys on his own accord, there are not many things Volkan regrets from his old lifestyle in Golmore. However, he is taken aback with how few of his leporine kin he has encountered in the outside world, and with many decades of leaving the jungle behind him, he has come to miss his homeland. Seeing a fellow Viera, be it Rava, Veena, or even the Shetona, will surely bring a warm smile to his face, with talk of shared or different cultures a wonderful topic of discussion. Perhaps you might even be from the same village as him?
